Democratic Side Chair Workshop: 12 - 16 FEB 2025 ( $1600 )
Democratic Side Chair Workshop. Be a part of this five day workshop and take home a timeless chair that you have crafted with your own hands.
Designed and developed by the legendary Curtis Buchanan, who introduced Glen to chairmaking 15 years ago, in his workshop in Jonesborogh, Tennessee. The Democratic chair provides people with the opportunity to be introduced to green woodworking and chairmaking by learning how to use a minimal and thus affordable group of tools. The chairs name reflects this basic complement of hand tools that are easy to source and readily available. This workshop is perfect for those wishing to experience chair making for the first time.
Participants will be taken through traditional chairmaking processes; using a chairmaker's shavehorse to hand carve the spindles and shape the various parts of the chair. Mortises are drilled by hand and eye and the seat carved and shaped with edged tools. The crest is also steam bent in house. You will use traditional chairmaker's tools such as draw knives, scorps and tapered reamers - leaving at the end of the week with a beautiful heirloom piece that will be passed down through generations.
All materials are included and all the tools required are supplied.
* Sets of U.S. printed plans for the Democratic Side Chair - Signed by Curtis Buchanan - are available for purchase, saving cost of postage from the U.S.
