Geometry : Six point star in sacred geometry, with Halleh Mortazavi, on Tuesday 31 March 2026
From engineering to exploring a passion for geometry and the perfection of pattern repetition and natural proportion in nature. Halleh's background is in science, her instruction will teach you skill and techniques in geometry and pattern construction that appears in both structural and decorative form in ceramics, jewellery, architecture and book art.
One-Day Workshop: The Six-Point Star in Sacred Geometry
This one-day workshop explores the six-point star as a fundamental form in sacred geometry. Working by only a compass and a ruler, participants will experience geometry as a meditative and embodied practice.
Beginning with the circle as a symbol of unity, we will divide space to generate the six-point star, uncovering its relationships to hexagonal order, symmetry, and natural proportion.
The workshop emphasises understanding geometry as a living language, one that has been used for centuries to express cosmological and spiritual ideas through form. The six-point star appears across many artistic traditions as a structural and decorative form. Examples of the six-point star pattern used traditionally in different mediums are pictured. Ceramics, Jewellery, Architecture, Book Art/Illuminated illustration.
On this one day intensive workshop you will spend the day creating a traditional patterned design (of your choice) to apply each of the techniques you learn. You will take this home at the completion of the class. Design and layout will be with Halleh's guidance.
This workshop will give you a taste of Persian/Islamic book art, which is painting a medallion (little Shamsa) an eight point star. During the workshop, Halleh will explain and show the geometry behind the eight-point star as well as the eight petal flower (the inner flower painted in turquoise).
Then, once you are familiar with the shape of flowers used in illumination; you will design the whole pattern; and finally paint the pattern.
Participants will learn to construct the pattern from a simple circle, developing clarity, focus, and sensitivity to proportion. The process encourages slowing down, attention, and allowing meaning to emerge through drawing.
Participants will:
- Construct a six-point star using classical sacred geometric techniques;
- Practice accurate compass and ruler drawing;
- Explore variations and extensions of the pattern;
- Explore pattern repetition and tiling.
Participants will take home:
- A finished six-point star geometric drawing;
- A transferable construction method.
A little more detail:
Introducing your Instructor: Halleh's background is in science. She earned her PhD in Electronic Engineering in image processing at the University of Manchester, however, always had a passion for Persian & Islamic art. She studied under the MA Programme at The King’s Foundation School of Traditional Arts, UK to solidify her knowledge, skill and techniques in geometry and pattern repetition.
"My main passion is illumination, especially Persian style (Safavid & Timurid era) as well as miniature painting. Moreover, I have realised a deep interest in ceramic painting and egg tempera as well. These two techniques contain hidden for me mysteries which I would like to explore further alongside practising my illumination & painting".
All materials are included / supplied.
