Spend a day watching and learning from a true master of the craft of woodturning. Master Wood Turner Ashley Harwood from Charleston, South Carolina, USA is heading out (for the first time ever) to Australia, exclusively for the Lost Trades Fair.

Ashley is renowned as one of the best production turners in the United States, and also for the supremely beautiful Sea Urchin Ornaments she turns, as well teaching classes and giving demonstrations throughout the year and in recent years developing and creating her own USA made range of specialty wood turning chisels and dedicated sharpening jigs and guides.

Ashley will be at the Lost Trades Fair on the 28th and 29th of March, but as a special addition to her visit to Australia for the first time, she will be holding a one day Turning Seminar / Demonstration in the workshop of chairmaker, Glen Rundell in Tylden.

Details of what you will experience with Ashley:

The day will start with introductions and then Ashley will demonstrate the fine spindle turning of a Sea Urchin Ornament - as seen below. She will demonstrate the use of a 1/2” bowl gouge, detail spindle gouge, and vortex tool.
Ashley will demonstrate how to sharpen all of these tools and will talk about cutting techniques and tool control in detail - demonstrating how to combine the basic cuts of spindle turning to create a pleasing design.
Assembly as well as preparation of the shell and packaging will be covered.

During this demonstration there will be a short coffee break, with tea, coffee and cakes.

After lunch (BYO lunch), for the second part of the day, Ashley will turn a wet bowl using the Push-Cut method and will demonstrate how, using the Push-Cut, it is possible to make a complete pass from the bottom to the top of the outside of a bowl in one cut, leaving a smooth finish and without using a lot of muscle.

Ashley will then demonstrate free-hand sharpening of a bowl gouge to create the 40/40 grind that she uses in the Push Cut Method. She will discuss the bottom bowl gouge and its use across the inside bottom of the bowl as well as the use of Negative Rake Scrapers to fix minor tear out.

Ashley will also talk about design aesthetics, e.g., bowl shape and curve, proportion of the foot, creating rim and foot designs that work together and what is attractive to potential buyers.

The demonstration will be on Glen's Long Bed Vicmarc VL300, the same lathe that Ashley uses in her own workshop in the U.S. There will also be an opportunity to have a look around my workshop, see the chairs I make and the space where I teach my chair making classes and check out the bandsaw sawmill I use to mill the timber for my chairs.  Not to mention see my two Wadkin patternmakers lathes - the Wadkin RS and its bigger, gear driven brother, the Wadkin RU.

This really is a once in a lifetime opportunity to spend a day watching and learning from one of America’s finest professional woodturners, here in Australia for the first time, and exclusively for the Lost Trades Fair and this singular event.

Parking is on site, right at the workshop and please BYO packed lunch.
Alternatively Kyneton and Woodend are an easy 10 minute drive from the workshop and have numerous lunch options. Tea and coffee and water are available all day.

Tickets to this exclusive event are extremely limited, to only 40 people.

Seminar ticket cost: $45.00 +GST (total $49.50 each)
